I am happy to be featuring Brittany (That Cupcake Lady) from Virginia Beach for August! She makes some of the most amazing cupcakes I’ve seen on Instagram. Her cupcakes are incredibly detailed with different textures and colors. I’m always in awe of her talent. Read on to learn a little bit about her and check out her favorite cupcake designs.
Can you share a bit about yourself?
My name is Brittany. I was born and raised in Virginia Beach. I’m a full-time commercial insurance agent, wife, and mother. In my spare time, I enjoy gardening and creating floral cupcakes.
I love your cupcakes! How did you get started with making cupcakes?
I started making cupcakes when I was trying to impress my boyfriend over 10 years ago. It apparently worked, as we are celebrating our 6th wedding anniversary this fall! My first time creating floral cupcakes was for a friend’s bridal shower a few years ago. It was then; I really fell in love with floral designs.
What are your favorite cupcake tools?
My go-to cupcake tools are my Rose Tip Petal and my closed Star Tip. The designs you can create are endless.
What is your favorite buttercream to work with?
I work a lot with American Buttercream. You can get a great texture to hold your designs.
For 2021, what do you hope to accomplish for your business/content?
In 2021 I am looking to streamline cupcakes and floral designs. Over the last 2 years, I have gone outside of my comfort zone with cakes and non-floral designs. Cakes tend to stress me out which leads to mediocre work and an anxious baker. I have learned it’s okay to focus on a particular craft and it’s okay to say no to orders outside of your specialty and desires.
What are your challenges with running a business?
My biggest challenge is time management. That Cupcake Lady is not a full-time venture, so creating time with family and time for myself can be challenging.
Where do you find your inspiration from?
All of my inspiration comes from flowers. I love taking a bride’s bouquet and creating the perfect set of bridal cupcakes to match.
What is on your next to try on your list for trying new techniques?
I’d love to get an airbrush machine so I can elevate our floral cupcakes to look even more realistic.
What are your favorite cupcake flavors?
My 2 current favorite flavors are our Coffee Bean Dream (Chocolate Cupcake with Chocolate Chips and Coffee Buttercream frosting topped with a Chocolate covered Espresso Bean) and Key Lime Pie! (Key Lime cupcake with a salted key lime buttercream frosting)
Can you share any advice for bakers who are looking to establish their social media presence?
In a world filled with bakers, find something unique to you, and that stands out. When people scroll through social media, you want them to recognize your style, knowing it’s you before they even see who posted. I would also suggest not giving up. Social media and algorithms change so much. I will have months where all I do is lose followers and months where I will gain a thousand. Consistency is key, and remember why you are posting in the first place.
