Check out what Bryonna had to say in our interview:
Can you share a bit about yourself?
Sure! My name is Bryonna, and I am an interior designer turned baker. I grew up in Dayton, OH, and got my degree in interior design and marketing, which was my lifelong plan. However, that plan got turned upside down once I actually started working as an interior designer and discovered that wasn’t my passion at all.
When I’m not baking or working on growing my business, I’m usually with family or friends, outside in a park somewhere, reluctantly running/working out to stay healthy, or dancing around to music in my living room.
How did you get started with cake decorating?
It was completely random. Never in my wildest dreams did “baker” ever pop into my mind. I would bake here and there with my mom using box cake mixes, but never took it seriously. It just was nice to bake when I had a craving. I taught myself how to decorate cakes in 2019 when I started my business by watching tons of YouTube videos and trying my hardest to mimic what I saw them doing.
Luckily, I’ve always had a creative/artistic mind, so the designs came fairly naturally. Being a visual learner definitely helped.
What is your favorite & least favorite process of baking/cake decorating?
My favorite part of cake decorating is thinking about how the customer is going to react when they see their cake. Also, when I’m creating a design that a customer gave me creative freedom for, those types of orders are when I can really let my creative flag fly high and create designs I’ve been wanting to do but never got requests for.
My least favorite part is baking. I hate the baking process, haha. It’s repetitive and boring. Luckily, I can do it with my eyes closed, but it’s definitely not the part of my business that makes me jump for joy.
What is your favorite buttercream to work with?
ALWAYS American Buttercream, for two reasons.
Reason 1: I’ve tried a few other types, but they were all too tedious and time-consuming, and the shelf life wasn’t great.
Reason 2: I have perfected my American buttercream recipe to the point that hundreds of other bakers now use it and get amazing reviews from their clients about it. I’ve had bakers tell me my buttercream recipe gave them the confidence to start taking wedding cake orders.

Where do you get your inspiration from?
Everywhere! When I see things, I think about how they can be turned into a cake design or how a certain flavor combination would make a good cake or cupcake flavor. Pinterest is my go-to when I’m stuck figuring out a design or just want to see what new trends are out there.
What are your favorite trends?
I honestly don’t have any favorite trends. Mainly, I get tired of trends because they become overused and then they’re not fun anymore. I love a classic white cake with florals or a buttercream floral cake. I know that sounds boring, but minimal is my jam and requires a different level of perfection that can’t be covered up with designs you may see on other cakes.
Scared money doesn’t make money. If you’re not willing to spend money on learning and elevating your skills, you will stay stuck and waste a lot of time trying to figure it out on your own, and time is money.

For 2025, what do you hope to accomplish for your cake and mentorship business?
I want to move fully out of the kitchen and pour all of my energy into educating other bakers. I will be opening spots to my first Bakers Growth Academy on June 1st, and I have so much knowledge and expertise to share with beginning bakers to give them the help I didn’t get when I started my business. My hope is that they will avoid a lot of the mistakes I made and feel more confident about being just as successful as anyone else in this industry. Here’s the link to my digital shop for resources that I offer, Digital Resources.
What advice would you give someone wanting to start a baking business?
Get a support/community group and invest in your growth. Scared money doesn’t make money. If you’re not willing to spend money on learning & elevating your skills, you will stay stuck & you’re going to waste so much time trying to figure it out on your own & time is money. Reach out to other bakers you admire & see what community groups they offer, if any. Connect with other bakers on social media by just sending them a nice message introducing yourself. Many of my current friends are bakers I connected with years ago, but we can always brainstorm together, complain about how crazy being an entrepreneur is, & get genuine feedback from somebody who understands.
What do you like to do with your free time?
I love to watch movies, visit my family, travel, go to stores and never buy anything haha, listen to music, and dance.
What advice would you give someone wanting to start a baking business?
My favorite food is Italian food, but I will always choose any dish with noodles.
