February Cake Decorator Spotlight

Hi everyone! I am featuring Cakes By Ludy (@cakesbyludy), located in Plano, Texas, USA, for February Cake Decorator Spotlight. I first came across her gorgeous cakes last year, and I love her distinctive style on many trends such as rainbow, square cakes, etc. I hope you enjoy this month’s feature!
Hi Ludy! Can you share a little bit about yourself?
Hello, I’m Ludy. I was born and raised in Cameroon, Africa, and moved to the US with my family when I was 18. I currently live in Plano, TX, I’m married, have a 2-year-old daughter who keeps me busy, and I work full time as a mental health nurse.
How did your cake decorating journey begin?
I’ve always loved baking which started at a young age. After college, I would bake and decorate cakes for family and close friends here and there, nothing major. About 2 years ago, my interest grew when I decided to make a cake for my daughter’s 1/2 birthday with online help. I was still on maternity leave, so I had the time, and I wanted to take cute pics of her with a cake. That’s when I found this baking world I had no idea existed, and now decorating cakes is a passion of mine as well as a source of income.
Which process of baking/cake decorating makes you the happiest?
Definitely the decorating process! I often find it relaxing, and it’s the best feeling when the ideas you have in mind translate perfectly on a cake.
What are your go-to tools when designing a cake?
I have to have a turntable, offset spatula, scrapper, and maybe a piping tip or two. I could do many designs with these items, and if you’re just starting as a baker, these are the staples, I think.
Where do you find your inspiration from?
I get inspiration from everywhere and anywhere. From designs on clothing to Instagram, sometimes a painting, or just imagination, it could be anything really.
What are the cake trends that you are currently loving?
I love the rice paper trend and how versatile it can be. I’ve used rice paper on one or two cakes, but I need to play with it more. I also like the cocoa bomb trend though I am yet to make one.
What is a cake technique that you would love to try soon?
I so want to learn how to make wafer paper flowers. I see these beautiful real-looking flowers on Instagram, and I’m in awe. One of these days, I’ll enroll in an online class I’ve had my eye on for some time now.
Do you have a preferred buttercream to work with?
I mostly work with American buttercream, but I also love using Swiss meringue buttercream and flour buttercream, especially when I want a less sweet option.
What is your favorite flavor(s)?
It’s so difficult for me to choose! Haha, I love strawberry, any citrus, coconut, vanilla, and chocolate in that order.
What do you enjoy doing besides making cakes?
I love spending time with loved ones, watching game shows, playing card and board games, traveling.
